چکیده

WHEN one considers the various types of intracranial lesion produced by trauma to the head-extradural haemorrhage, subdural hemorrhage, cortical laceration, haemorrhage into brain substance or ventricles-there is one type of injury which of recent years has excited much speculation as to the mechanism of its causation, namely, " contre-coup injury." It has long been observed in persons who have died as a result of trauma to the head and have come to autopsy that gross damage to brain tissue most frequently occurred, not in the situation immediately underlying the area of skull at which the traumatic force was applied, but rather at the pole of the brain diametrically opposite to the point struck. Thus, for example, a blow impinging on the skull in the region of the occiput might in some cases cause

Untangling the Effect of Head Acceleration on Brain Responses to Blast Waves.

Multiple injury-causing mechanisms, such as wave propagation, skull flexure, cavitation, and head acceleration, have been proposed to explain blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI). An accurate, quantitative description of the individual contribution of each of these mechanisms may be necessary to develop preventive strategies against bTBI. However, to date, despite numerous experimental a...

On the Pressure Response in the Brain due to Short Duration Blunt Impacts

When the head is subject to non-penetrating (blunt) impact, contusion-type injuries are commonly identified beneath the impact site (the coup) and, in some instances, at the opposite pole (the contre-coup). This pattern of injury has long eluded satisfactory explanation and blunt head injury mechanisms in general remain poorly understood. There are only a small number of studies in the open lit...

Serial Mini-Mental Status Examination to Evaluate Cognitive Outcome in Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury

OBJECTIVE This study was aimed at finding out the changes in cognitive dysfunction in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and investigating the factors limiting their cognitive improvement. METHODS Between January 2010 and March 2014, 33 patients with TBI participated in serial mini-mental status examination (MMSE). Their cognitive functions were statistically analyzed to clarify their...

[Relationship between CT findings and prognosis in diffuse brain injury].

Types of diffuse brain injury (DBI) were classified based on a study of fifty patients with acute, severe head injuries. This study focused on findings of computed tomography (CT) and outcomes of the patients. The level of consciousness was estimated by the Glasgow Coma Scale; greater than 8 in 28 cases; 8 or less in 22 cases. The overall mortality rate was 28%, however the rate ranged from 8 t...

Molecular mechanism of chicken ovalbumin upstream promoter-transcription factor (COUP-TF) actions.

Chicken ovalbumin upstream promoter-transcription factors (COUP-TFs) are one of the most characterized orphan receptors of the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor superfamily. COUP-TFs play important roles in the regulation of organogenesis, neurogenesis, and cellular differentiation during embryonic development. COUP-TFs were generally considered to be repressors of transcription, however, there ...
